Electro-stimulating Implants for Bone Regeneration: Parameter Analysis and Design Optimization
Description
The goal of the project is to analyze relevant parameters of electro-stimulating implants and their respective impact on bone regeneration in order to optimize the implant's design and stimulating parameters. Optimization will be approached through computational simulations. The simulations are supported by experimental measurements in cooperation with correlated projects.
Approach
In essence, this project progresses in the following three stages:
- Simulating the electric field on a composite femoral head model with different parameters.
- Simulating the electric field and experimental validation using a human femoral head.
- Analyses different electric field parameters in an animal model for verification of the numerical simulation
- Classifying the available MRI data and stimulating the electric field on the human femoral head model with different bone defects according to the classification from MRI.
Results
So far the following results have been achieved:
- Electric field simulation on a composite femoral head model with different parameters.
- Electric field simulation on a human femoral head model with different parameters and experimental validation.
- Numerical simulation of the electric field distribution in an animal model.
- Optimisation of the electro-stimulation implants position with avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
- Automatically calibrating dielectric bone properties with iSIGHT and COSMOL
